N.B. Brass Letter Scale, circa 1900
French tabletop brass letter scale, resting on a circular blackened wooden base. The lever mechanism moves a pointer across a dial graduated from 0 to 100 grams. The instrument bears the mark “N.B.” as well as the inscription “Bté S.G.D.G.,” an abbreviation for “Breveté Sans Garantie du Gouvernement” (Patented Without Government Guarantee). The “N.B.” mark is associated with the firm of Narcisse Briais and was subsequently retained by his successor, Georges Restorf. Given that it dates from around 1900, this piece can be attributed to the Narcisse Briais company, likely under the direction of Georges Restorf. Original patina and normal signs of wear.
Details: Origin: France; Manufacturer: Narcisse Briais, likely Georges Restorf as successor; Period: circa 1900; Materials: brass and blackened wood; Height: 15 cm; Scale: 0 to 100 grams; Markings: N.B. Bté S.G.D.G., Condition: antique patina and signs of wear.
