NC-135. North Carolina. December, 1771. 1 Shilling. PCGS Banknote Superb Gem Uncirculated 68 PPQ.

No. 19125. Signed by J. Harvey, L. De Rosset, J. Rutherfurd and R. Caswell. This small and simply-designed 1 Shilling note featured a basket of fruit at the lower left and a blank back. As one would expect from a note of this grade, all aspects are superb in every way - from the large and perfectly-balanced margins, to the crisp white paper, to the four sharp ink signatures and to the ideal embossing. We really see nothing that could be improved. Tied with one other (#19133) for Top Pop at both services combined for the denomination, and with three others for the entire colony of North Carolina. PMG's highest graded for this type is a 66 EPQ. The One Shilling denomination is much scarcer as the Population Reports and Auction Archives bear out. PCGS Banknote Pop 1/None Finer.

Estimate: $600 - $800.

Provenance: From the Mid-Continent Collection.
