Rare early signed and dated Salem, MA sampler with two courting couples and a spotted dog standing on green flowery hillocks. A cupid with bow, and other design elements, drawn on the background linen but not stitched indicate that Betsy completed most of this ambitious sampler but didn't quite finish it. She did complete the verse THIS NEEDLE WORK OF MINE CAN TELL/ WHEN A CHILD IS LEARNED WELL BY MY/ PARENT'S I WAS TAUGHT NOT TO SPEND/ MY TIME FOR NOUGHT, and she inscribed it: BETSY MANSFIELD AGED 11 – 1773. Elizabeth (Betsy) Mansfield, born in 1762, was one of seven children born to Matthew Mansfield (1726 - 1800) and Hannah Proctor (1729 - 1799) all in Salem, MA. Silk on linen: 23 1/8" x 19 ½" framed.
