Carte de visite album bound in full embossed dark morocco leather over heavy beveled boards with raised center cartouches, spine titled in gilt "Album", four milk-glass boss protective feet to both covers, and dual heavy pierced brass clasps. Interior contains heavy gilt-bordered cardboard leaf apertures with manuscript identification beneath windows. Hingham and Boston, Mass., and California, ca. 1860s - 1870s. Album measures approx. 5 1/4 x 6 1/2 x 2 1/2 in.

A remarkably preserved Reconstruction-era photograph album connecting prominent Massachusetts political, martial, and pioneer figures. Assembled primarily by the family of Demerick Marble (b. 1819), carriage maker of Hingham, Massachusetts (closely kin to James Marble, subject of the early pioneer daguerreotype in the previous lot), the album preserves an intimate cross-section of New England society and Civil War veterans.

Key highlighted portraits include:

1. Gov. John A. Andrew: Full standing CDV portrait of Massachusetts' legendary Civil War "War Governor" and champion of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, captioned in ink.

2. Major John Howard Robinson (45th Massachusetts Infantry): Vignette bust portrait of Robinson (1832 - 1896) in uniform, backmarked by famed Boston photographer J.W. Black, inscribed in ink "Major John Robinson". Robinson enlisted from Newton, MA in September 1862 as a 2nd Lieutenant in Co. K, 45th Massachusetts Infantry ("The Cadet Regiment"), seeing action in North Carolina before his postwar promotion to Major.

3. Charles E. Gorham: Vignette bust portrait inscribed "Chas. Gorham of California", depicting Charles E. Gorham (1832–1909), prominent California 49er, Republican politician, and Secretary of the U.S. Senate (1870–1879).

4. Marble Family Likenesses: Numerous identified members of the Marble family, including Demerick Marble, Mrs. Demerick Marble, Charles Hawkes Marble, Mrs. Charles H. Marble, Marion W. Marble, and a multi-generational group portrait.
