Author:
Title: NEW FUN COMICS No. 3
Place Published:
Publisher:DC [Indicia: National Allied Publications Inc.]
Date Published: April, 1935
Description: Fair (1.0). Mild spine stress, mild edgewear, ownership rubberstamp below logo ("ELLIOTT STEWART"), edge foxing and tears up to ½" to covers, top right corner of front cover clipped, small stain to bottom right corner of front cover, fingermarks and 2" soil spot to back cover, top right corner area of all pages soiled, some tears to pages (the largest being 3"), a large piece of the second-to-last page is neatly trimmed out: INCOMPLETE. Contains 36 pages (including the partially-trimmed page). A very attractive copy of this rarity. If not for the partially-trimmed page, this mag would grade 3.0. Yes, the partially-trimmed page means that technically the grade should be 0.5, but we're willing to err on the side of excess for this tuff-to-find treasure. Provenance: The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION.

Overstreet: "Don Drake on the Planet Soro cover & story (sci-fi, 4/35); early (maybe 1st) DC letter column." Gerber Photo-Journal Guide Scarcity Index: 8 ("Rare: 11-20 copies"). CGC Census: None (CGC does not offer grading for tabloid-sized comics). Sales Data: Heritage has sold 3 copies: a "VG+" for $8400 in 2020; a "FR/GD" for $776.75 in 2006; and a "VG" for $3737.50 in 2002.

Credits: Cover: Ken Fitch and Clem Gretter. Scripts: Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson, Vin Sullivan, Adolphe Barreaux, Tom Cooper, John Lindermayer, Lyman Anderson?, Joe Archibald, W. C. Brigham, Walter Scott, Henry Kiefer, Whitney Ellsworth, Jack Warren, Dick Loederer, Tom McNamara, Adolph Schus, Ken Fitch. Art: Charles Flanders, Vin Sullivan, Adolphe Barreaux, Tom Cooper, Dick Loederer, John Lindermayer, Lyman Anderson?, Joe Archibald, W. C. Brigham, Henry Kiefer, Whitney Ellsworth, Jack Warren, Tom McNamara, Ed Stevenson, Adolph Schus, Clem Gretter.Tapped by Taschen: The DC Universe Collection copy of New Fun #3 is given a full-page illustration in Taschen's 75 Years of DC Comics: The Art of Modern Mythmaking (page 11). The text notes that "Despite the economic challenges of the late depression, New Fun appears to have been successful. By the end of 1935, Wheeler-Nicholson collected some of the stories into Big Book of Fun Comics, the primal ancestor of DC's annuals, and launched a companion title, New Comics."****************************************
The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION comprises over 40,000 comic books, encompassing every single DC comic published for retail sale from 1934 to 2014. The collection was amassed by British music producer Ian Levine over the course of several decades, and it's been hailed as the single greatest collecting accomplishment in comic book history. This collection served as the basis for former DC Comics president Paul Levitz's monumental book 75 Years of DC Comics: The Art of Modern Mythmaking, published by Taschen in 2017. PBA is proud to present this epic collection in a series of themed sales, including The DC UNIVERSE COLLECTION Part 3: The GOLDEN AGE, coming this summer. To join the DC Universe Collection notifications list, contact pba@pbagalleries.com.

Enjoying PBA's DC Universe Collection: Pre-Hero, Ashcans and Oddities sale? A very small number of softcover and limited edition hardcover auction catalogues are available for purchase. The catalogues are fully illustrated, thoroughly researched, and make excellent reference works for DC diehards. To order a copy, or to inquire about consignment opportunities, contact Ivan Briggs, PBA's Director of Comics: ivan@pbagalleries.com.
