NEWTON, JOHN. Autograph Letter Signed, to Baptist

[ translate ]

"MR. FULLER'S BOOK . . . I THINK IT ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I HAVE READ" NEWTON, JOHN. Autograph Letter Signed, to Baptist minister John Ryland, promising to send a newly printed sermon if not too expensive, reporting that he recovered from a foot injury, asking that he convey greetings to mutual friends, praising a recent book by Andrew Fuller and, in the postscript: "I wish you would date your letters, you seldom do." 1 page, 5¼x7¼ inches; inlaid, loss to few letters at upper edge from seal tear, minor scattered soiling to verso, address panel on verso.[London], 5 March 1794

"Fox's[?] Sermon in 82. It is new in the Pr[int. I] would send you one, when they come out, if the price of Carriage, was not more than the Sermon. But perhaps they may find their way to Bristol."On the 19[?] Jan'y I strain'd my instep violently by a fall in the street, & was confined near 3 weeks. But the Lord has enabled me to return to my usual course of services. But it will probably be some time before I can walk about as formerly. But it has been a Merciful Visitation. Hold Then me up & I shall be safe, is a needful prayer for me, both in the respect to my Natural & my Spiritual Walk. One false step in either, may be attended with painful consequences.". . . I can make no remarks upon Mr. Fuller's book, but such as would have the appearance of Compliments. I rejoyce that He wrote it. I have read it three times. I think it one of the best books I have read; & I think they will hardly attempt to answer it. Ah! my friend, the points in which he & Dr. [Joseph?] Priestly differ, are of real importance. May the Lord bless you in all your connections. Forget not to pray . . . ."In 1793, Andrew Fuller's book was published, entitled The Calvinistic and Socinian Systems Examined and Compared as to Their Moral Tendency.
