NICHOLAS II FABERGÉ PRESENTATION FRAME & PHOTO

IMPERIAL PRESENTATION FABERGÉ FRAME & SIGNED PHOTO, NICHOLAS II. Comprising a large and substantial sturdy silver frame, the interior border banded in beads, the sides beveled and the upper margin displaying an applied Imperial crown and with original beveled glass. Verso in polished wood with inset fold out strut stand. The frame displaying a large official gelatin silver print bust portrait of Tsar Nicholas II mounted on a card with embossed mark of BOISSONNAS ET EGGLER. The upper margin with dedicatory inscription in the hand of Tsar Nicholas "To Prince Vladimir Nikolayevich Orlov," and on the central lower border inscribed Nicholas and dated 1906-1911. The frame hallmarked St. Petersburg 1908-1917, Cyrillic maker's mark FABERGÉ and workmaster initials of Karl Gustav Hjalmar Armfelt (??) and 88 silver standard. 15.75 inches x 12.25 inches (40 x 31 cm).

Provenance:
Iconostasis, London, where acquired by the consignor in 1986 and accompanied with coopy of receipt.

Prince Vladimir Nikolayevich Orlov (1868-1927) was one of Tsar Nicholas II's closest advisors and between 1906 and 1915 headed the Tsar's military cabinet. Orlov continued his military duties until he was banished by the Tsar in 1915 to the Caucasus after losing the struggle for power to Rasputin. On August 19, 1915, after an unsuccessful attempt to discredit Rasputin and the Tsarina he and Vladimir Dzhunkovsky, First Deputy Interior Minister, were discharged from their posts, and four days later, the Tsar took supreme command of the Russian armies fighting on the Eastern Front of the First World War.

Boissonnas & Eggler were official court photographers active in St. Petersburg between 1902-1923, located on Nevsky Prospect Number 24.
