The engravings are among the finest and most influential pictorial early representations of Turkish characters and costumes. Nicolay accompanied Gabriel d'Aramont, French diplomat and ambassador, on a mission to Constantinople in 1551. While there he wrote this account and sketched his remarkable figures of Ottomans, Arabs, Armenians, and islanders in costume. Folio (290 x 200mm). Woodcut device on title, initials and headpieces, 65 (of 67) engraved plates of antique turkish costumes, without pp. 143-144 as issued, with final blank (lacking A6 and G6, some browning and spotting). 18th-century calf, gilt spine (some rubbing and restorations, modern guards).
