According to her own statement, Catherine Marie-Agnes Fal de Saint Phalle is said to have been sexually abused by her father, an impoverished French banker, for several years from the age of eleven onwards and to have discovered art through later therapy. Raised primarily in New York, Saint Phalle returned to France in 1952. In 1961, Saint Phalle took part in a happening and concert entitled "Variations II" with her future husband Jean Tinguely, Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg, orchestrated by John Cage and performed at the American embassy in Paris with David Tudor on piano. From 1962 she received financial support from Alexander Iolas, who organized exhibitions for her and introduced her to the circle of prominent artists. In 1962 she took part in the Dylaby exhibition in Amsterdam together with Tinguely. From 1965 onwards, the first “Nanas” were created – female figures with particularly voluptuous and round shapes, initially made of wire and textiles. Soon I started working in polyester instead. In 1965 the two meter high “Lili ou Tony” was created for the Peter Stuyvesant cigarette factory in Zevenaar. In 1966, at the instigation of the director Pontus Hulten, with the collaboration of the Swede Per Olof Ultvedt, Saint Phalle installed a 29 meter long reclining sculpture called "Hon" (Swedish: "she") in Stockholm's Moderna Museet, which could be entered through the vagina and Inside there was, among other things, a bar and a cinema. In 1968, Niki de Saint Phalle took part in an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York for the first time. Further exhibitions followed in Munich and Hanover in 1969, in Paris in 1970 and in Amsterdam, Stockholm, Rome and New York in 1971. In 1979 she began building the “Giardino dei Tarocchi” in Capalbio, Tuscany. This was released to the public in 1998. The artist lived there for several years and designed the interior. Even better known is the construction of the Stravinsky Fountain in front of the Center Pompidou in Paris, which began in 1982 and was designed by her together with Jean Tinguely. Niki de Saint Phalle was one of the founding exhibitors at the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn. Among other things, she exhibited over 20 large sculptures, some of which were walkable, on their roof garden. In 1999, Niki de Saint Phalle took on the commission to design the grottoes in the Great Garden in Hanover-Herrenhausen, which opened in 2003. Her work “L’ange protecteur” is located in the hall of Zurich main station. Since 2008, several of her works have been exhibited in the FLUXUS+ museum in Potsdam. Awards: In 2000 she was awarded the Japanese Praemium Imperiale and made an honorary citizen of the city of Hanover. To mark this occasion, she donated over 400 of her works to the Sprengel Museum in Hanover. The company daycare center at the University Hospital of Muenster has been named in honor of the artist since 2000. In 2002, the Passerelle shopping arcade in downtown Hanover was renamed Niki-de-Saint-Phalle-Promenade.
