This is a special technique that was used to bring the lustre of the diamonds to its best quality. Extra information: The top part of the ring is, most likely, born as an earring. And later in its lifespan (somewhere around the years 1930-1940) transformed into a ring. Such re-use is not uncommon after splitting of heritages.
