NORTHERN ITALIAN, PROBABLY PADUA, CIRCA 1450-1480
PLAQUETTE WITH THE VIRGIN AND CHILD SURROUNDED BY ANGELS

bronze, in an associated Italian, early 16th-century cypress wood frame with Christ as the Man of Sorrows
bronze: 8.7 by 6.8cm., 3½ by 2¾in.
frame: 20.5 by 13.5cm., 8 by 5⅜in.

Condition Report:
Overall the condition of the bronze is good, with some wear and minor dirt to the surface consistent with age. There is rubbing to the lacquer patina and the surface at the high points. There are two holes near the top edge, and another smaller hole at the centre of the top edge containing a pin. There are some minor nicks to the bronze.
There is wear to the frame, consistent with age, including minor nicks and scratches throughout. There are areas of loss and dark staining to the bottom edge, perhaps as a result of being near candles. There is minor stable splitting to the wood, consistent with the material. There is a metal loop for hanging on the reverse.
