A Royal presentation 14k gold snuff box, richly chased and engraved with flowers and foliage, the hinged cover with applied foliage on a matted ground, the centre adorned with King Christian IX's crowned monogram on an oval guilloché ground with translucent red enamel, flanked by six silver-mounted old-cut diamonds. Rim numbered 2962. Maker C.M. Weishaupt & Söhne, Hanau circa 1860s. Weight app. 169 g. L. app. 8.7 cm. H. app. 3.5 cm. W. app. 6.4 cm.
According to family lore the tabatière was a gift to the Norwegian dramatist Henrik Ibsen (1828–1906) from King Christian IX (b. 1818, king 1863–1906). It was bought in the 1920s by the present seller's mother and grandmother from a shop in Larvik, Norway. Here it was told that the tabatière had been in the ownership of Ibsen's family.
It was customary for royals to give extraordinary gifts, like this presentation snuff box, as diplomatic presents or in acknowledgment of great achievements. A similar royal snuff box is in the Amalienborgmuseet.
