Portrait of Marie Elisabeth Salby (1891–1977). Signed Freddie, okt. 43. Oil on canvas. 80×60 cm.

Provenance: Acquired by the portrayed person directly from Wilhelm Freddie. Since it's creation the work has been in in the possession of the portrayed's family.

Marie Elisabeth Salby was the wife of patron and collector Poul Ørsted Salby (1896–1962) of whom Freddie also painted a portrait of. The somewhat more surreal portrait of the husband was sold at our auction in Bredgade September 2020. When Marie Elisabeth saw her portrait for the first time she found it a bit too radical after which Freddie repainted parts of the work.
