LOT 0010

NS Savannah Ephemera

[ translate ]

Eleven (11) items from onboard the NS Savannah ship including a clothing hanger, menus, a model, a jigsaw puzzle, and a ticket from the launching on July 21, 1959 in Camden, New Jersey. The lot contains: a ship model on wooden base (2.5" tall x 18.5" long); NS Savannah Dinner Menu - NY to Port Everglades, dated February 24, 1965 (13" tall x 10" long); NS Savannah wine list; NS Savannah launching program and reserved seating ticket; NS Savannah passenger book and deck plans; clear glass ashtray; novelty blue rectangle ashtray; novelty wooden puzzle; NS Savannah clothes hanger.

The NS Savannah took her maiden voyage on August 20, 1962. The ship was remarkable in that it was the first nuclear-powered merchant ship. It was constructed with funding from the United States government agencies with the mission to prove that the US was committed to the proposition of using atomic power for peace and part of President Eisenhower's larger "Atoms for Peace" project. The sleek and modern design of the ship led to some maritime historians believing it was the most attractive merchant ship ever built. The china synergizes both the mission of using nuclear power for peace with the atomic depiction while incorporating the modernist design inclinations of the ship to produce a beautiful and unique set.

These items come from the Estate of esteemed diver Bart Malone (1946 - 2020). Bart Malone dove for 58 years and diving shipwrecks for 45 years. He was a senior curator and board member at the Museum of New Jersey Maritime History. He dove shipwrecks along the East Coast of the United States, in addition to Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Orkney Islands, Scilly Isles, and the Great Lakes. He has dived on WWI and WWII shipwrecks, commercial and private vessels. His dives include the USS Monitor, Empress of Ireland, over 180 dives along on the Andria Doria, and German U Boats amongst many others. Bart Malone made over 2,700 dives.

Condition: The set is overall in good condition. More detailed condition reports and additional photographs are available by request.
