NWA 12262 Martian Meteorite Martian (shergottite) Northwest Africa Found: 2018 This shergottite meteorite is simply a true one-of-a-kind and superlative offering. As the MAIN MASS of the Martian Meteorite NWA 12262, this fine specimen weighs 3.2 kilograms (7 pounds) making it one of the largest pieces of Mars in existence on Earth. Found in 2018, this is a relatively recently classified rock of Martian origin. The major specimen features a phenomenal fusion crust with a blackish color over the majority of its textural surface. The underlying exposed rock, revealed in patches lacking the fusion crust and providing a window into the core of the meteorite, exhibits a mysterious greenish hue, which blends yet still contrasts with the darker, blackish rind. The massive offering has a wonderful shape with several major faces and displays a primary orientation and evidence of flow lines. Some cut marks are visible, as tiny samples were removed for testing, authentication, and classification. The piece shows beautifully in multiple display orientations as the medium-grained example with a diabasic texture also features small and dark glassy shock melt pockets.
