Sefer Yesod on Rashi's Commentary. A Single, Rare Edition.

Rabbi Yaakov Selnik was the son of Rabbi Binyamin Aharon Selnik, Rabbi and Av Beit Din of Pidhaitsi, Poland. Rabbi Binyamin authored Shu”t Mas’at Binyamin and was a leading Rabbi of the Council of the Four Lands.

Rabbi Yaakov assumed the mantle of leadership following his father’s passing, serving as Av Beit Din and Ram of the Yeshiva of Pidhaitsi.
His composition, Nachalat Yaakov on Rashi’s commentary on the Torah was first printed in Cracow, 1642.
It was later reprinted in Constantinople, in 1726 with the Re’em’s commentary, HaMizrachi.

Nachalat Yaakov focuses on expounding on the quotes from the Mishna, Talmud and Midrashim that Rashi brings down.

The title page of the first edition states: “This is the Nachla (inheritance) of those who serve G-d…” It continues to describe the nature of the book, detailing that it is an extensive commentary on Rashi’s commentary on the Torah, and differs from that of Rabbi Eliya Mizrachi’s commentary.

In his introduction, Rabbi Yaakov credits his father who encouraged him in his youth to study the weekly Parsha, Shnayim Mikra V’Echad Targum along with Rashi. This caused him to delve in Rashi’s commentary, and was the precursor for composing this work.

[2], 208 leaves. Complete copy in fair-good condition. The title page is attached using a cardboard leaf. The first 3 leaves and a few of the last leaves have worm holes. Leaf 79 has a tear that has been taped. Brown stains on the last third of the book. Antique, simple binding.

The book features many handwritten glosses. These have not been checked and are unidentified. Signature on the title page.
