Nantan Meteorite Iron, IAB-MG China - (25° 6'N, 107° 42'E) Found: 1958 Weighing a substantial 20 kilograms (44 pounds), the most noticeable quality of this meteorite is its massive size. Representing the Nantan variety, out of China, this monstrous rock from Outer Space will most definitely remain where it is installed. Measuring nearly 14 inches (35.5 cm), at maximum dimension, this piece is large in dimensions supporting its significant mass. Originally found back in 1958, this Iron has been popular among collectors for decades. This huge offering looks like what a meteorite should, and any such Iron really does convey the magnitude of what happens out in the reaches of the universe. The heavy and dense specimen exhibits a somewhat layered texture with a rugged and mountainous nature to its primary display surface. The reverse side is a bit "weathered" and not as slick in terms of ‘skin’ as the front face. This is a giant of a piece sure to elicit reactions as a main offering in any collection. The exterior does evidence minor and shallow fracture, but the piece appears remarkably stable for this type of Iron, especially of the Nantan variety, which can be lacking in stability and prone to significant rusting, which this larger representation does not exhibit. The sizable and stable meteorite boasts an overall dark, brown coloration, with a soft metallic luster. Measurements: 13.78 x 9.25 x 4.41 inches (35.00 x 23.50 x 11.20 cm), weighs 20.32 kilograms (44.8 pounds) HID09710052018 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
