Nantucket Lightship Basket, Stephen Gibbs (MA. 1896-1974)
having a swing handle, an oval top with a carved porpoise on the cover, carved closure and side knobs, branded upon the base “S. Gibbs Maker, Nantucket, Mass”. Inscribed on the inside lid "Liza Lamberton". Stephen Gibbs wove baskets for 20 years from 1954 until he passed away in 1974 and his baskets are considered among the finest woven and highest quality of this time period using oak staves and long eye hole clasp to hold the closure peg . This clasp become a trademark of a Gibbs baskets.
