Narcisse Guilbert is the only child of Aimable-Guillaume Guilbert, a carpenter, and Louise Dubreuil. The family left Bouville around 1887 to settle in Mont-Saint-Aignan. After Aimable-Guillaume Guilbert died in 1890, his widow and son moved to Rouen. Narcisse Guilbert worked as a delivery courier at Thierry-Martin, a clothing company. His first attempts on Narcissus date back to 1894 and it is to Joseph Delattre, with whom he met, that he owes his first notions of painting. He painted his mother and enrolled at the Rouen School of Fine Arts around 1895, taking courses taught by Philippe Zacharie.
