Narino Bichrome Seated Coquero (Coca Chewer)

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $400**

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador/Colombia, Carchi-Narino region, ca. 750 to 1500 CE. A charming and rare ceramic sculpture of a seated coca chewer. He sits on a stool, part of an integrated plaque, his long, spindly limbs giving him a slightly comical form. His body is without decoration, but his face is painted with two black lines under the eyes, one thick and one thin, perhaps indicating tattoos. His mouth is open and his eyes closed, emphasizing that he is in the act of using the drug, perhaps to enter a religious/shamanic state. Size: 5.25" W x 6.6" H (13.3 cm x 16.8 cm).

Provenance: ex-private Gill collection, Orlando, Florida, USA; ex-Artemis Gallery; ex-private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private J.S. collection, New York, USA

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
