Narino Pottery Figural Vessel Seated Female

[ translate ]

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador/Colombia, Carchi-Narino region, ca. 750 to 1500 CE. A charming redware vessel in the form of a seated female. Wearing only a skirt, the rotund woman rests her attenuated arms on her bulbous belly, just below a pair of petite breasts. Her stylized visage faces forward, presenting a pair of generously lidded, almond-shaped eyes, a round nose, and an incised smile, all capped by a long coiffure that extends mid-way down her back. A perforation at the top of her head forms the spout of the vessel. Her petite feet peak out from the hem of her elaborate skirt, which is intricately adorned with a black-painted crisscross motif. Note the artist's careful attention to detail, as evident in her incised nostrils and delineated toes and fingers! Size: 4.1" W x 5.6" H (10.4 cm x 14.2 cm)

Provenance: private Southern California collection, California, USA, acquired through descent 2006; ex-private California collection, USA, before 2000

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
