Shield measures 2" x 2.5". Blue silk ribbon with National Association bar. Engraved on the reverse "COL. JOHN C. HAYS/TEXAS/1st MOUNTED VOLUNTEERS" in seriffed letters. The whole in a wood case with shield engraved "Colonel/John/C/Hays" in script. **Fine condition overall. Some wear to plated finish with ribbon having fallen apart. Box in good condition. Original examples were available for purchase by veterans in bronze, silver, and gold finishes. Some repairs to pin catch. Engraving appears to have been added at a later date.** $400-$600
