Native American Cheyenne Beaded Mocassins - 1870-1890

[ translate ]

Title: Native American Cheyenne Beaded Mocassins - 1870-1890 ca.
Date/Period: 1870-1890 c.
Dimension: inches 9.8" x 3.3" x 3.3" // cm 25 x 8,5 x 8,5
Material: glass beads, brain tanned deer hide
Provenance: Private British collection. Ian West Collection. I have purchased this mocassin pair together with many other high quality Native American pieces from an old British collection. Some of the objects have belonged to the great British collector and Native American art expert Ian West, thats the case of these Arapaho mocassins. I have got in contact with the British collector not directly but throughout intermediaries who did not want to reveal his name: he has sold his collection because needed money to pay for his illness treatment and since he was seriously ill he prefered to remain anonimous.

Ian West (1924- 2015) was a renowned expert of Native American cultures and artifacts, he was a friend of Edward H. Blackmore, the foremost authority of Indians in the UK at the time and some few years later Colin Taylor, a noted scholar and collector on the same subject. They remained lifelong friends and collaborated publishing books and articles and displaying their collections at exhibitions across the country.
Additional Information: Antique mocassins pair made of brain tanned hide , full covered with Venetian beads. The inside of a mocassin is painted with a red, blue and green pattern. On the sole it is written the number "10" and other text by now almost faded. They still have the tag of the Ian West collection, with the item number. The little leaf note is from previous collectors.
