[Native American]. Godfroy, Gabriel (1834-1910). Partly printed document signed ("G. Godfroy"), Peru, Indiana, 13 August 1877.

Oblong slip (179 x 76 mm), minor toning.

THE LAST CHIEF OF THE MIAMI TRIBE.

Gabriel Godfroy, also known as Waapanaakikaapwa ("White Blossoms"), was born in Blackford County, Indiana in 1834. By the time of his birth the Miami tribe, which had once been the dominant Indigenous tribe of the region, had been relegated to the Big Miami Reserve, which consisted of 760,000 acres and was the largest Indigenous reserve to ever exist in what is now the state of Indiana. Though many were forcibly relocated south (primarily to Oklahoma) in the years afterward, Godfroy and others were allowed to remain in the state due to their willingness to assimilate into white culture. By the time of his death the Miami territory in Indiana was nearly non-existent, as was the Miami tribe itself, though Godfroy was instrumental in ensuring that the language and history of his people were preserved for future generations. In later years he had become something of a local celebrity due to his status as the last chief of the Miami and for his public appearances at various state and local functions.
