Rare Gem Quality Amethyst Geode Sculpture Uruguayan Amethyst geodes are mined from the same rock formation as their relatives just north of the border in southern Brazil and are volcanic in origin. However, Uruguayan Amethyst can usually be distinguished from its Brazilian relatives by the typically paler color and in the case of the higher grade Amethyst, the color of Uruguayan Amethyst is darker overall. Many of the Uruguayan Amethyst geodes also contain agate in their shells. Most Uruguayan Amethyst is open pit mined and the geodes or crystals must go through a series of washing or drying cycles to remove the stubborn mud so that the Amethyst crystals can be exposed. Due to the very hard basalt matrix in which the geodes are formed and the tendency for the geode to break open on its own either through natural processes or during mining, it is difficult to acquire whole geodes from this area so an Amethyst half/section or slab is usually the most commonly seen.
