Naturalistic Roman Marble Head of a Male Youth

[ translate ]

Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. Skillfully sculpted from a single piece of marble, the head of a male youth with sensitively rendered features including heavy-lidded eyes with drilled pupils beneath a thin brow line, a naturalistic nose, plump cheeks, and full, gently parted lips. Soft tresses of a thick, wavy coiffure frame his cherubic visage with veristic ears at either side. The classicizing features and treatment of the eyes suggest that the head is from the Julio-Claudian Period, and the verso is fully carved in the round. A wonderful bust of a male youth from ancient Rome! Size: 5.4" L x 4.6" W x 5.9" H (13.7 cm x 11.7 cm x 15 cm); 10.8" H (27.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Dr. Jeffrey Stiles collection, Spring City, Pennsylvania, USA, acquired 1980s to 1990s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
