Nayarit San Sebastian Redware Female Figure

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, San Sebastian style, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A beautiful example of a hollow-built and highly burnished statue depicting a high-status woman based on her ample body decorations and dignified posture. The woman sits with bent legs atop a pair of integral stool legs and has dense negative resist spiraling and stippling motifs covering her abdomen and lower body. Her slender arms are bedecked with bangles and curve beneath her breasts and the scarification marks on her shoulders, and a thick necklace with three thin pendants is wrapped around her wide neck. Her expressive countenance stares upwards with almond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose with a pair of rings, thin lips, and tall ears adorned with six total earrings, all beneath a tall forehead and a finely striated coiffure.
