Nazca Polychrome Portrait Vessel

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca culture, ca. 100 BCE to 200 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished vessel of a bulbous form with a round but stable base, a tapered shoulder, and an annular rim surrounding the deep basin. Painted across the exterior is a stylized face with diamond-shaped eyes flanking a protruding nose, a petite mouth with pursed lips and radiating black stripes, and enormous rectangular bags under the eyes. Around the rim is a densely crosshatched register representing the figure's hat as the verso displays the coiffure bangs curling down to the nape. Size: 3.875" W x 3.9" H (9.8 cm x 9.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Drimmer collection, Florida, USA, before 1965

Condition Report: Minor abrasions and fading to pigment across exterior surfaces, and a couple of small spalls, otherwise intact and very good. Great preservation to pigment throughout. Old inventory label beneath base, and old inventory number written in black ink beneath base.
