Near Eastern Bronze Axe Head

Ancient Near East, northern Iran, Bronze Age, ca. 2nd millennium BCE. A cast-bronze axe head with a central socketing hole presenting a tapering base, a larger frontal blade head with a vertically-oriented edge, and a smaller rear blade head with a horizontal edge. The smaller size of this axe head suggests it was used for more utilitarian practices - such as shaping wood, mud bricks, or other material - rather than for use in battle. Fine layers of brown and green patina have formed across the composition. Size: 5.3" L x 1.25" W x 1.125" H (13.5 cm x 3.2 cm x 2.9 cm); 3.2" H (8.1 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition Report: Small nicks to bottom of socketing shaft and vertical blade edge, with light encrustations, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits as well as great green and brown patina throughout.
