Near-Miniature 11th C. European Lead Pilgrim's Ampulla
Europe, Medieval Period, ca. 11th to 13th century CE. Cast hollow lead Pilgrim's ampulla of a near miniature scale, its faces adorned with a rosette on one side and a motif that resembles either a crown or a fleur-de-lis on the other side, both delineated in bas relief. Such ampullae would have been brought back from a visit to a pilgrimage, similar to a souvenir, and would have held holy water from a shrine. Size: 1.625" W x 2.125" H (4.1 cm x 5.4 cm)
