Near-Miniature Greek Attic Pottery Lekythos

Ancient Greece, Athens, Attic, ca. late 6th to early 5th century BCE. A finely-modeled, wheel-thrown pottery lekythos - a vessel used to store scented oils and perfumes - boasting areas of lustrous black glaze. The near-miniature vessel is defined by a piriform body, a planar shoulder which tapers to a tall cylindrical neck, a thick, flared rim, and a strap handle joining neck to shoulder, all atop a petite discoid foot. A register of tongues and stippling adorns the shoulder, and only areas of the shoulder, neck, and beneath the foot are unglazed. Faint silvery iridescence is scattered across some glazed areas. Size: 1.8" W x 4" H (4.6 cm x 10.2 cm).

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Richard Wagner collection, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA, acquired in the 1960s

Condition Report: Restoration to most of handle with overpainting along new material. Minor nicks to shoulder, rim, handle, and body, with light fading to areas of glaze color, and minor abrasions. Scattered areas of faint silver iridescence on some glazed surfaces, and light earthen deposits throughout.
