Necklace w/ 18th C. Dutch Glass Trade Beads

[ translate ]

Western Europe, the Netherlands, Dutch, ca. 18th century CE. A strand of 43 glass trade beads: 9 large, lozenge-shaped periwinkle blue beads that are beautifully faceted, 8 somewhat smaller smooth, lozenge-shaped cornflower blue beads; 5 smooth lozenge-shaped aqua blue beads; 22 cherry red rounded spacer beads; and finally one large Speo Star bead presenting a mesmerizing star-like pattern (hence the name) in red, white, and cobalt blue hues, similar to a Venetian chevron bead only with a smooth surface. The Dutch traded beads like these with the African Dogon people in exchange for coveted goods such as furs. All beads date to the 18th century and are strung on a modern cord so that the strand is perfectly wearable! Size: 39.5" L (100.3 cm); Speo Star bead measures 1.375" L x 1" in diameter (3.5 cm x 2.5 cm)

Provenance: private southwestern Pennsylvania, USA collection

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
