Necklace w/ Mississippian Canine Tooth & Shell Beads

Native American, Southern United States, Caddo / Mississippian culture, ca. 900 to 1450 CE. A collection of over 50 shell and canine tooth beads strung in modern times on a modern cord. The chalky white shells are a thick, discoidal form, with gray mineral encrustations throughout. At the center are 10 canine teeth from perhaps a coyote or fox that are drilled through the root for suspension. Size of strand doubled: 24" L (61 cm); tooth: 1.25" L x 0.5" W (3.2 cm x 1.3 cm)

Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s
