Hammer

£150

Needlework samplers, two, the first in 18th century band sampler form, on linen, worked with more figures and objects than is the norm, including in the first half griffins, dog, several figures, a flower urn, building, crowns, a peacock, a ship, hearts, and the alphabet, and in the second half, which is the opposite way round, larger motifs, and the date 1740 ( Unusual but not unique, these samplers were worked in order to fold over and make a bag, and it has been said this form was done by Quakers) approx. 80 cm by 25.5 cm; together with a later sampler dated 1823, worked with similar small figures, crowns, hearts, a dog, crosses, trees and plants, rows of the alphabet and numbers, and examples of different stitches to the bottom third, approx. 37cm by 32.5 cm (2) (Shipping category C)

More Information

The band sampler has faded so is slightly hard to read. It has damage, mainly in the section with the smaller workings, and a dark liquid stain. The second sampler is clearer, one hole noted top right.
