Nelle Reppy (American, 1903-1969) Untitled, New Deal magazine or newspaper cartoon, circa 1934 India ink and gouache on heavyweight paper 14 x 11 inches (35.6 x 27.9 cm) (image) Signed in lower region: Nelle Reppy Nelle Reppy was born in Boulder, Colorado in the first decade of the 20th century and by 1930 was living in New York City as a self-employed artist. Her drawings appeared in the April 1931 Harper's Bazaar and undoubtedly in other magazines of the period. In 1934 she contributed to a long-running series of romantic cartoons produced by the Newspaper Feature Service. She is known for women's fashion illustrations for newspapers and magazines, and in the 1940s she wrote and drew several children's books. This original is certainly tangential to a collection centered on President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Nonetheless, it is an elegant work of art and clearly in the fine-line style of the 1930s. The interplay of blacks and whites and contrast between the daughter's checkerboard dress and her mother's lined gown is impressive. The caption tells us why it is in this collection: "But if this is the new deal, Mother, why do I have to wait until after the depression to come out?" It was likely published in 1934, two years after FDR promised "a new deal for the American people" to combat the Depression.
