Nelson Dawson for The Artificers Guild, an Arts and Crafts silver and enamel rectangular table box, London 1902, the hinged cover with an enamel on copper inset plaque with Dieu Nous Donne Bonne Adventure , on a speckled white ground with heart shaped leaves to the angles, the sides plain, on an angled base, 10.5cm (4 1/8in) long, 272g (8.75 oz) gross Nelson Dawson (1859-1941) was initially a painter before turning to silversmithing and lived at Swan House, Chiswick Mall, London. He founded The Artificers Guild in 1901 with his wife and Edmund Spencer. At this early stage of the Guild, all the silver or gold produced carried Nelson Dawson's own maker's mark, N.D. The enamelling was carried out by Dawson's wife, Edith. In about 1914 they both returned to painting.
