Neo-Assyrian or Neo-Babylonian Cylinder Seal

8th-7th century BC. A white jasper cylinder seal, pierced vertically for suspension; accompanied by a museum-quality impression and a typed and signed scholarly note issued by the late W.G. Lambert, Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: 'The stone is cracked and there is a little surface damage, but the design is entirely clear. In the centre is a standing god, in long robe open at the front, from which one leg projects. On each side he is holding off a composite monster: general body of a bull, but wings and other non-bovine details. The one on the right as the talons of a bird of prey as hind paws, the tail of an insect, and head of a bird, turned backwards. The one on the left is more of a normal bull save for the wings. A rhomb serves as a filler, and there is a lunar crescent in the sky. This is a Neo-Assyrian or Neo-Babylonian seal, c. 700-600 B.C. It is engraved entirely with the cutting wheel and drill, and is a good example of its type.' 5.53 grams, 24mm (1").
