A magnificent and rare huge 18th century French Master oil on canvas painting . The painting is a very large size and has a great deal of atmosphere. The artist has captured a classical theme to the subject and the lady sits contemplating within a woodland setting with one foot delicately placed within a shallow pond. The artist who is unknown captures the moment with great technical skill and attention to tonality and depth. The overall size including frame is 131 x 112 cm and the painting itself showing is 114 cm x 92 cm The painting is on its original unlined canvas and perhaps could do with tightening and a clean ; however we think that it has a certain patina which somehow enhances the atmosphere that the artist has managed to capture. There are a number of areas of craquelure. There appears to be no repair to the canvas itself although there is some overpainting ; in particular to the woodland background although it has been blended-in quite nicely. The painting has also been re-lacquered and in our opinion is ready to hang as it is. Given it's antiquity the canvas is remarkably good condition. The frame is not original to the art and has been modified to accommodate the work; and is from a later period we think most likely from the late 19th century. A very large work of art from an unknown master and we acquired the painting from an art dealer who acquired it from a private Parisian collection. Please note that due to post - Brexit issues that some ( sometimes significant) delays can be expected with shipping and once we have sent the painting we are in the hands of the delivery/shipping company. It appears the delays occur once the objects have reached EU destinations where customs are often holding up deliveries for some time. The painting will be insured for shipping. The frame is offered as a gift and we cannot guarantee safe shipping of old frames. Shipping costs reflect the huge size of this painting.
