Netherlandish, first half of the 18th century
The Four Seasons

a pair of marble groups, on nero portoro marble bases
38 by 40cm. and 37 by 41cm., 15 by 15¾in. and 14⅝ by 16⅛in.

(2)

Catalogue Note:
Similar to François Duquesnoy’s Children, allegorical groups in the form of putti personifying the Senses, the Elements or, as in this case, the Seasons, underwent significant development in Baroque sculpture in the Low Countries, particularly in Brussels, Antwerp and Amsterdam.

From the third quarter of the 17th century onwards, in his design for Amsterdam Town Hall – in which childhood features prominently – Artus Quellinus the Elder established the foundations for this genre of allegorical iconography, which Rombout Verhulst, like Grupello, would help to disseminate in Brussels, Düsseldorf and elsewhere in the Netherlands. In the first third of the 18th century, the Antwerp workshop of Jan Pieter van Baurscheit the Elder, in turn, produced numerous groups of children (kindertje), personifying in particular the cycle of the Seasons or other allegorical themes, intended for gardens and architectural decorations.

Provenance:
Private collection, Prague.
