[ translate ]

Lot Details & Additional Photographs The ducat, dated 1729, is as follows: (3.38g), 22mm, .986 gold, .1106 oz. AGW, KM12.2. Mint State and presented in a wooden box; the silver rider, dated 1734, is (32.23g), 42mm, KM90.1, Mint State with some corrosion, presented in a custom box.

From the Estate of the late Jacqueline C. Harris, Durham, North Carolina

The merchantman Vliegenthart hit a sand bar and sank off Zeeland in 1735 shortly after departing for the Dutch East Indies. The wreck was finally salvaged in the 1980s and yielded a fortune in gold and silver coins. Indeed, the coin offered here is probably one of 2,000 1729-dated gold ducats that were found still packed in a chest that was submerged for 250 years. A booklet describing the Vliegenthart shipwreck and its coins is included here.
