Netsuke (1) - Wood - Unsigned - Monkey on a mushroom - Japan - Edo Period (1600-1868)

Description The monkey is seated on the head of a very large upside down mushroom. His left hand and right arms are leaning on the stem of the mushroom. The imperfections of the wood have been skillfully used by the carver to represent damages suffered by the mushroom on the underside of the head. The netsuke is not signed but it is very nicely balanced and details are finely rendered. Nice himotoshi on the underside.
