Netsuke - Elephant ivory - Baku - Japan - Edo Period (1600-1868)

This item CANNOT be sold outside the EU. Rare little netsuke depicting the nightmare-devouring Baku, a chimeric creature of Japanese folklore that guards from evil spirits and bad dreams. This netsuke was probably used to empty the tobacco from the bowl of the pipe In very good overall condition with fine amber hued natural patina, signs of wear and natural vein marks consistent with its age, possibly a microscopic chip on one nail A Japanese item from the Edo period. The item was made prior to 1947, and is therefore in compliance with European Union regulations regarding the sale of ivory.
