Netsuke - Elephant ivory - Ciechi in lotta - Japan - Meiji period (1868-1912)

Elephant ivory netsuke depicting a fight between blind men, finely carved in detail, himotoshi holes under the base. Sato or mojin, were figures preferred by artisans, and scenes of daily life were requested in urban areas by buyers who preferred subjects belonging to their social class, though the themes were treated with realism and humour. Since the eighth century they wandered around the country as storytellers and itinerant musicians accompanied by the sound of the biwa, flute or drumsticks, as masseurs (anma) , having acquired great tactile sensitivity.
