Netsuke - Elephant ivory - Quail on millet - Japan - Edo Period (1600-1868)

Description A compact and accomplished study of a quail on two millet heads, the leaves going up the side of the quail (uzura) . The quail represents martial spirit and is also a symbol of poverty. Quail and millet together are a symbol for autumn. The plumage of the quail is naturalistically carved, as well as the millet with its smooth leaves. Natural himotoshi and signature located one of the leaves OKATOMO.
