Netsuke - Marine ivory - Risveglio di Daruma - Japan - Meiji period (1868-1912)

Marine ivory netsuke depicting Daruma seated as he stretches after waking up. According to legend, the monk Bodhidharma lost the use of his arms and legs after meditating for 10 years without moving. During meditation, in a moment of weakness, he fainted and fell asleep. When he awoke from shame he tore off his eyelids and threw them to the ground. Immediately afterwards, leaves sprouted that were able to ward off sleep, thus the tea plant was born. Excellent condition - classic natural veining and openings of marine ivory - see photos. The lot will be carefully packaged and shipped within 1 or at most 2 business days from the day of payment. The shipping price includes delivery via UPS, TNT, DHL or SDA courier (depending on destination address) with full insurance and professional packaging.
