Netsuke, Okimono (1) - Elephant ivory - Blind with blinds - Japan - Meiji period (1868-1912)

Large okimono netsuke of a brawl between blind people. Since the VIII century blind people, called Sato or Mojin, wandered around the country as story tellers or travelling musicians. Usually, as in this case, they were depicted with a swollen eye and one squinting as a way of representing their blindness. Often the blind would practice money lending at exorbitant rates of interest and so became known as very quarrelsome and were depicted fighting between each other, usually over money. Signed in red lacquer under the base. Late 19th century. A Japanese item from the Meiji period. The item was produced prior to 1947, and is therefore in compliance with European Union regulations on ivory trade. The item comes with a certificate of authenticity which will be sent to the buyer.
