New Hampshire Presentation Sword

Grouping includes a presentation sword and carte-de-visite (CDV), relating to J. Homer Edgerly.

M1850 Foot officer's sword presented to J. Homer Edgerly of the 3rd New Hampshire. Edgerly was twice-wounded during the Civil War and breveted Major for "gallant and meritorious conduct" at the Battle of Fort Fisher. It was there he heroically captured a Confederate flag flying over "Mound battery," said to be the largest Confederate flag captured during the war. This feat won him great acclaim- the sketch shown in the cover photo of this lot was included in the 3rd NH Infantry's regimental history.

Sword bears an inscription on the top mount reading "Presented to J.H Edgerly by the men of the 3rd New Hampshire Vol." Leather scabbard with brass mounts that are handsomely engraved, drag exhibits a hand-engraved patriotic design and eagle motif. Blade bears a bright, patriotic etched design in excellent condition.

Also included is a carte-de-visite (CDV) of Edgerly. Boston's photographer's imprint on verso.
