Covers and Cancellations
1855 (20 June) envelope from Sydney to Bristol, carried on board the S.S. Phoenix on her ill-fated voyage to Singapore, bearing 1854 Diadem 1/- cancelled by dumb obliterator, showing handstruck "3" in red, London Paid transit c.d.s. and, on reverse, despatch and arrival datestamps; the envelope in a somewhat distressed state not unsurprisingly having been salvaged from the wreck. Very rare being one of two examples recorded from the wreck. Photo

Note: In "Australia New Zealand UK Mails to 1880" by Colin Tabeart, page 149, it is stated that the wooden paddle steamer S.S. Phoenix left Sydney on 23 June under command of Captain Chilcott, with 5 passengers and a large mail. She was wrecked in the Torre Strait, mail saved, transferred to Danish ship Cecrops, and taken to Batavia. Thence to Singapore and on to UK by P&O service, arriving Southampton on 5 October. The two covers seen were both to the USA.

Subject to 5% tax on Hammer Price in addition to 20% VAT on Buyer’s Premium. Not applicable to "Buy Now " offerings. For more information please view Terms and Conditions for Buyers.
