New York Classical Carved Mahogany Worktable Possibly Workshop of Michael Allison Circa 1815

[ translate ]

A fine New York classical worktable of richly carved mahogany, possibly from the workshop of Michael Allison, circa 1815. Four splayed legs, carved with overlapping leafage and terminating in delicately carved paw feet on casters, support a shaped shelf from which rise four spiral-twist columns supporting the two-drawer case and writing desk above, with further spiral-twist columns at the four corners. The drawers retain their original gilt-brass basket-of-flowers pulls. The hinged top lifts to reveal a writing surface of blue baize with side compartments for pens and ink bottles, and a storage compartment beneath for sewing equipment — a highly sophisticated table of the finest workmanship.
