[ translate ]

Subject: Southeast Asia, World War II
Period: 1945 (dated)
Color: Printed Color
Size: 33.5 x 46

This "newsmap" was issued on Monday, January 22, 1945, and covers the news from January 10-17, 1945 - the 280th week of the war. The large map at center entitled "Road to Manila" shows General MacArthur's troops pushing farther inland on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. Additional inset maps along the sides of the sheet include "Western Front Salient", "Soviet Offensive", and three untitled maps of Southeast Asia, giving the reader a complete view of the war efforts for the preceding week.

The verso contains a colorful large map of northern Sumatra and southern Malaysia, providing topography detail with a three-dimensional quality. A legend at bottom identifies railroads, roads, tracks, trails, and rivers. Prepared by the Army Information Branch and issued by the U.S. Government Printing Office.

From 1942-46, the U.S. Army published "newsmaps" to keep American troops updated on the war. These weekly posters were distributed and posted in every American installation in the world and were intentionally more visual than descriptive to help engage and motivate personnel.
Condition: A
Issued folding on a clean sheet with several small separations at the fold junctions as is common for a map of this size.
